Computer Updates

Computer Updates

University computers are managed by the Information Technology department

Updates

Computers for University Faculty and Staff should be kept up to date to ensure proper function and security.

Computers are replaced when the hardware no longer works properly due to age, malfunction, or damage.

Windows Updates

From the Start menu, select Settings > Updates & Security. Check for Updates and install/restart your computer.

Your computer should regularly download and install updates and prompt you to restart as well.

Apple OS Updates

  1. From the Apple menu in the corner of your screen, choose System Preferences.

  2. In the System Preferences window, click Software Update.

  3. Click Update Now or Upgrade Now:

    • Update Now installs the latest updates for the currently installed version, such as an update from macOS Big Sur 11.5 to macOS Big Sur 11.6.

    • Upgrade Now installs a major new version with a new name, such as macOS Monterey.

North Park IT does restrict major version upgrades while we test for compatibility. Please contact IT with questions about major upgrades.

Replacement

If you are working with IT Support Services to receive a new computer please review these steps to make sure everything is ready.

Once a new computer is ready, please be prepared to exchange it with IT Support Services. You will not be allowed to retain both old and new computers.

IT Support Services does hold on to computers that are returned to IT for two (2) weeks to ensure that you have all the data needed. Please let us know if you are missing any files or information within that time. After two weeks, data from old computers is wiped and generally not recoverable.

Back Up Files

Please take care to back up all files. IT recommends Microsoft OneDrive for file storage and automatic backup.

Many employees still make use of our legacy "z-drive" storage. We recommend migrating your files to OneDrive by uploading needed files using the sync tool or on the web.

New University Windows computers back up to OneDrive automatically.

Applications

Work with IT Support Services to identify any applications or programs that will be needed on your computer.

Many applications are available in the Company Portal on new Windows devices.

You may need to note or export settings on your old machine to import or replicate on your new machine. This includes bookmarks in your browser or other personalization.
