Windows Upgrades and Updates

Updates
Windows updates are smaller “point” updates that are downloaded and installed periodically. These are usually available shortly after release and enforced within about 2 weeks.
Upgrades
Windows Feature Upgrades are major releases for the operating system.
These upgrades are restricted on university devices while we test compatibility with different applications and wait for a stable release.
Windows 11 Upgrade
Once the Windows 11 Upgrade is available for your University Computer you will be prompted on your device in Settings > Update & Security.
Information Technology will enforce deadlines for security, but it can be installed manually on your own prior to that deadline using Windows Settings.
Settings
Open the Start menu and select Settings.
Choose Update & Security.
You should see options to either Download, Download & Install, Restart Now, or Schedule the Restart.
If Windows Update says that your device is up to date, then no new software is currently available. If you think there are pending updating that you’re missing, you may want to restart your computer and check again.
Enforcement and Delay
Required Updates and Upgrades will be downloaded and installed based on an enforcement deadline.
Windows Updates will notify users starting (7) days before a required Windows update with options to initiate it immediately or postpone.
Windows Upgrades will notify users starting (14) days before a required deadline with options to initiate it immediately or postpone.
If the device does not complete the required update/upgrade before the grace period, you will see more aggressive notifications and pop-ups.
You may have an option to delay the update/upgrade, but after the grace period Windows will force a restart. IT suggests setting aside some time before the enforcement deadline to prevent disrupting critical activities.
