Physical Processing
This page gives details and instructions about how to physically process the following items:
Books
Place call number on the spine of the book.
- If the spine is too narrow (or if book is spiral bound) - place spine label on lower left corner of the front cover.
- Cover label with a label protector
- General and Reference books require a clear spine label
- Curriculum Center items require a yellow spine label
- Christian Education books require a blue spine label
- Textbooks require a purple spine label.
- Rub label protector with bone folder.
- Stamp all three edges with "North Park Library" stamp (black ink)
Stamp center bottom of title page with address stamp (black ink)
- For Reference books only, stamp "In Library Use Only" (red ink) under the barcode on the inside of the back cover.
Taping
- Hardbound books:
- Place single-sided Tattle-Tape on the top edge of a metal rod
- Insert the rod in spine of the book with the sticky side of tape facing you
- Slide the rod through while holding the spine
- Pull out rod only
- Firmly rub spine of book to help tattle-tape stick
- Paperbacks:
- Use the two-sided Tattle-Tape and pull off the shorter strip
- Using the edges of the light green strip, position the tape as far into the crease of the back cover as possible
- Close the book and press along spine to secure
- Reopen the book and remover the light green strip
- Spiral bound:
- Place single-sided Tattle-Tape on the inside back cover, about ½" from spine
- Cut a strip of clean, white paper and place it over the tape
- Use clear book tape to secure the paper
- Hardbound books:
Last Steps
Scan all books to confirm that location, call #, barcode, and title are correct.
Arrange all books in call number order and place on short shelves behind the reference desk.
CD
- Remove back plastic cover of CD. (This is easiest if you remove the CD first.)
- Cut a Tattletape to fit and place on side of paper back cover so it would face out if on a shelf.
- Replace paper and plastic back cover.
- Pull out paper insert from front of CD.
- Add Call Number and "Do Not Put in Book Drop" Sticker
- Cover with label protector
- Write call number around the center of the CD. (Do not add NPU Sticker. Do not write if the CD is double sided.)
DVD
- If DVD case is plastic:
- Pull out cover from behind the clear plastic.
- Put Tattle tape on binding (if case is clear put a white sticker over it)
- Add Call Number and "Do Not Put In Book Drop" Sticker on cover and place it back in the plastic case
- Place round NPU stickers around the center of the DVD. (Note: Do not put on if the DVD is double sided)
- Write Call Number on DVD going around the outside of the round sticker (Do not write if the DVD is double sided)
- Put in plastic security case.
- If DVD case is cardboard:
- Place Tattletape in Binding and cover it with a white sticker
- Add Call Number and "Do Not Put in Book Drop" Sticker
- Cover with label protector
- Place round NPU stickers around the center of the DVD. (Note: Do not put on if the DVD is double sided)
- Write Call Number on DVD going around the outside of the round sticker (Do not write if the DVD is double sided)
- Put in plastic security case.
Withdrawn
- Strike through spine label and barcode with permanent marker
- With red ink, stamp "discard" on
- The back cover under the barcode
- On the title page near the North Park stamp
- On all three sides of the book
