Physical Processing

This page gives details and instructions about how to physically process the following items:

Books

  1. Place call number on the spine of the book.

    1. If the spine is too narrow (or if book is spiral bound) - place spine label on lower left corner of the front cover.
    2. Cover label with a label protector
      1. General and Reference books require a clear spine label
      2. Curriculum Center items require a yellow spine label
      3. Christian Education books require a blue spine label
      4. Textbooks require a purple spine label.
    3. Rub label protector with bone folder.
  2. Stamp all three edges with "North Park Library" stamp (black ink)
  3.  Stamp center bottom of title page with address stamp (black ink)

    1. For Reference books only, stamp "In Library Use Only" (red ink) under the barcode on the inside of the back cover.
  4. Taping

    1. Hardbound books:
      1. Place single-sided Tattle-Tape on the top edge of a metal rod
      2. Insert the rod in spine of the book with the sticky side of tape facing you
      3. Slide the rod through while holding the spine
      4. Pull out rod only
      5. Firmly rub spine of book to help tattle-tape stick
    2. Paperbacks:
      1. Use the two-sided Tattle-Tape and pull off the shorter strip
      2. Using the edges of the light green strip, position the tape as far into the crease of the back cover as possible
      3. Close the book and press along spine to secure
      4. Reopen the book and remover the light green strip
    3. Spiral bound:
      1. Place single-sided Tattle-Tape on the inside back cover, about ½" from spine
      2. Cut a strip of clean, white paper and place it over the tape
      3. Use clear book tape to secure the paper
  5. Last Steps

    1. Scan all books to confirm that location, call #, barcode, and title are correct.

    2. Arrange all books in call number order and place on short shelves behind the reference desk.

CD

  1. Remove back plastic cover of CD.  (This is easiest if you remove the CD first.)
  2. Cut a Tattletape to fit and place on side of paper back cover so it would face out if on a shelf.
  3. Replace paper and plastic back cover.
  4. Pull out paper insert from front of CD.
  5. Add Call Number and "Do Not Put in Book Drop" Sticker
  6. Cover with label protector
  7. Write call number around the center of the CD.  (Do not add NPU Sticker.  Do not write if the CD is double sided.)

DVD

  1. If DVD case is plastic:
    1. Pull out cover from behind the clear plastic.
    2. Put Tattle tape on binding (if case is clear put a white sticker over it)
    3. Add Call Number and "Do Not Put In Book Drop" Sticker on cover and place it back in the plastic case
    4. Place round NPU stickers around the center of the DVD. (Note: Do not put on if the DVD is double sided)
    5. Write Call Number on DVD going around the outside of the round sticker (Do not write if the DVD is double sided)
    6. Put in plastic security case.
  2. If DVD case is cardboard:
    1. Place Tattletape in Binding and cover it with a white sticker
    2. Add Call Number and "Do Not Put in Book Drop" Sticker
    3. Cover with label protector
    4. Place round NPU stickers around the center of the DVD. (Note: Do not put on if the DVD is double sided)
    5. Write Call Number on DVD going around the outside of the round sticker (Do not write if the DVD is double sided)
    6. Put in plastic security case.

Withdrawn

  1. Strike through spine label and barcode with permanent marker
  2. With red ink, stamp "discard" on
    1. The back cover under the barcode
    2. On the title page near the North Park stamp
    3. On all three sides of the book
