Better World Books Processing

Better World Books Processing

In 2011, Brandel Library created a partnership with Better World Books to handle our withdrawn books. Better World Books has created a number of instructional videos that will supplement this procedure.

Pre-screen and Sort Materials for Donation

  1. Materials that are badly damaged, moldy, or missing pages should be recycled. See the screening guidelines below for a general overview.
  2. Books without ISBNs should be set aside and donated as ARC books (for Antiquarian, Rare, and Collectable Books) - remember: "when in doubt, send it!"
  3. Books with ISBNs should be pre-screened using the online tool in their client portal. (username is ameyer@northpark.eduand the password is npuvikings)
    1. "Send It!" books should be set aside for shipment.
    2. "Don't Send It!" books can be recycled

Box and Ship Donations

  1. Better World Books provides free boxes for shipments - they can be requested through in their client portal.
    1. Each box holds approximately 20 textbooks or 35 regular books.
    2. They ask for a minimum of 10 boxes and that requests be in increments of 10 or 25.
  2. Better World Books asks that books without ISBNs (called ARC books) and books with ISBNs be boxed and shipped separately.
  3. Carefully pack boxes according to that division using the packing techniques outlined in the video.
  4. When convenient, print off shipping labels from their client portal and mail the boxes
    1. For less than 40 boxes, click on "Ship my Books" and follow the instructions.
    2. Print off the labels and affix to the boxes.
    3. For just a few boxes, adding them to the normal outgoing mail process is fine.
    4. For more than 2 or 3 boxes, either schedule a pickup from the mail room or drop the boxes off.
